Winter is, essentially, a yin time when the natural world gets sleepy: trees and plants go into their own hibernation time and our natural woodland creatures are not seen so frequently.
Our life energies also become slower and quieter and, with the dark evenings, we too seek our hibernations, closing the curtains and curling up in a cosy, warm room with a good book or dvd.
I believe that it is a good thing to go with the energy flow of the seasons and to balance out the gentle yin energies with some stronger yang energies by wearing brighter colours and eating warming foods. Notice the beautiful colours of the autumn leaves – sumptuous burnt oranges, dark reds and greens, and the gorgeous reds of the berries. By wearing cheery nature colours we can bring in more yang energy to give some balance.
It is preferable to let go of the yin foods of the summer months: the ice-creams and raw foods can be too cold for the next few months. It is a good time to bring in more warming foods such as home-made soups and stews and to use spices to help keep the body temperature warm.
